Social networking is boosting album sales

I just read an article over at ars technica written by my friend Jacqui Cheng regarding album sales getting a boost from blogs, social networks and other social media.

"That trend doesn't just apply to music from the Big Four, either. Albums from independent labels enjoyed the same level of success. But if an album was from a Big Four record label, sales increased five-fold after 40 legit blog posts. If blog posts crossed 250, album sales turned out to be six times the average, regardless of label." - ars

I think a lot of the boost can be attributed to bands maintaining a MySpace page, which of course is logical as many music lovers tend to congregate there.

Let's not forget though, the potential of free advertising and traffic from social media can be staggering, and can easily boost a bands popularity across the Net in a very short time.
