It appears that a recent uproar of privacy advocates, users, news sources and across the blogosphere has caused facebook to change its policy and method to delete your profile.
Until recently the task of removing, a facebook profile is placed on the user. To remove a facebook profile the user has must manually delete every single item that they ever posted including wall posts. For many facebook users removing their profile became a daunting task. It seems that the manual method could still leave traces of the users profile on the facebook website.
Facebook has announced that users can now contact facebook via email to have their profile removed completely. Facebook officials are mum about a future option of a one-click profile deletion process.
"The updated Facebook help page now includes the question “How do I delete my account?” The answer: “If you do not think you will use Facebook again and would like your account deleted, we can take care of this for you. Keep in mind that you will not be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you have added.
The entry then says, “If you would like your account deleted, please contact us using the form at the bottom of the page and confirm your request in the text box.”” - New York Times
It is still not clear that after having a user account deleted by emailing Facebook, if any backup data is retained, or if so how long it is retained.
Many people on facebook use credit cards to purchase applications and other items, which hopefully is removed along with a profile. The question is: are credit card numbers and other information being retained after a users account is removed?
