Fox News Claims Facebook’s Death Spiral Has Started

facebook.com

A melodramatic headline if I ever saw one. Fox News is reporting and Lance Ulanof wrote it, so it must be true, right (note my sarcasm)? I like the way Lance makes the connection between AOL’s declining business with facebook and he claims it is because both AOL and Facebook both are or have made it easier for users to leave.

“Eventually, AOL agreed to make it much easier for people to cancel their AOL accounts. These days, few people talk about how many members AOL has, and I'm certain the number shrinks every day.” Lance Ulanof

His article is a good read, but mostly rehashes recent news about facebook’s activities and problems.

Let the facebook exodus begin!

Paraphrasing Marge Gunderson, "I'm not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your police work, there, (Lance)." An analysis of this nature would benefit from some, um data? Comparing Facebook's value proposition with a for-pay dial up ISP demonstrates a complete lack of perspective. He comes off like an old crank complainig about young whippersnappers. If I were a cynical conspiracy theorist I'd point out that Fox News and MySpace are part of the same company, but that would be giving Fox too much credit.

Haven't seen anything as presumptuous as this FOX News article. Ironically, offering users the option to leave and delete their account safely would only serve to attract the potential conservative users. The social media space is about embracing openess, and it's good that Facebook is finally realizing the importance of this virtue.

I'm starting to get sick of facebook and the apps and everything so this somehow does not surprise me.

I love the irony in that as well.

Hey Keith,
There seems to be a lot of ironic things happening around facebook. Not sure if it is the end but you can bet folks will be looking for better environs, if not now, sometime.
