The Big List of Social Sites

This page is updated as I discover new social media sites. The list in in each category is ranked alphabetically rather than by popularity to be fair with all of the sites. I will leave the "rating" up to you. It I have omitted or miscategorized a site please contact me. Also please let me know if you find a site that is not longer in service so I can take it off the list.

This list is updated frequently so please do not copy the list and publish it elsewhere (I've already seen several sites that have copied the entire list).  I put a lot of time and effort into finding and checking each entry in the list. Do feel free to link to the list so that your readers and visitors can view the most up to date listings. Thanks Allen

This is quite an extensive and impressive list. Thanks for putting it together. I believe that within the next 12 months all sites for social aggregation [by function or subject matter] will be seamlessly interconnected. The next "new thing" will be "networks within networks" according to personalized hierarchies and filters.

Hi CapitalClinic, I had been doing a lot of research and the deeper I dug the more I found, so naturally I decided to post what I had found. The list is far from complete but the best I could do in a three day period. I agree totally on social aggregation, it will become very pervasive and seamless.

As and when all web-based social communities become "conjoined" and, thus, seamless [just one click adjuncts of one another], the following question takes center stage [over and above the proliferation of yet more social sites]: how does one develop the "mother of all indices/indexes" that can improve upon the google search bots and their "proprietary" algorithms?

Wow that's a mouth full and your guess would be as good as mine on that.

Allen, I came across your list during a search on "social media." Thank you, this is exactly what I was hoping to find.

Frankly, I didn't realize that there were so may new platforms where users could contribute, aggregate and sort content.

It has made me wonder why it took so long for traditional media to adopt "tagging" on their websites. Many traditional sites also do not attempt to engage their users in the process of adding context to content (via links to other relevant sources that they didn't produce).

Could it be that the people who built these traditional media websites still think like legacy publishers? They're focused on exclusivity and exclusion -- not collaboration and inclusion.

Howdy Digital Lifescapes! The sheer number nearly boggled my mind, until I started building the list I had no idea there was so much to find and explore. By no means is the list complete either. I’ve discovered more to add when I have time to check them all out. Maybe this week sometime I can update the list again.

Traditional media for the most part doesn’t “get” the web, online publishing or social media. What is going to happen is information overload (them) and eventually they will realize where all their readers have gone. They write about it, they report on it, yet they still don’t understand it. I will admit having come from a print publishing background to online publishing. It took me a while to see the enormous potential of reaching readers via social media. It didn’t take much time at all to embrace it for all it’s worth.

niche social sites:(which I am thinking may be the next big thing - not everyone has the high speed Internet and unlimited bandwidth for video)

HerOrbit.com
BlackPlanet.com
Beliefnet.com

Another one like Squidoo: Helium.com

Do you think IMVU the 3D instant messaging browser constitutes virtual worlds? They're kind of positioning it as such

Hi Justin,
An IM browser is an instant messaging application, not a social server per se.
