I ran across a blog post on compete.com regarding the the top social networks for February 2008.

"For the big players in the space, February represented a slight decrease in traffic, but the year- over-year growth rates seem to indicate that social networking (as an industry) has yet to peak. The table below shows the top social networks in February 2008, ranked by monthly visits. This ranking factors in both total audience size, and also intensity of use."

While the numbers look to be on par my biggest problem with the data is compete itself.

Compete claims to use data from 2 million consumers, I don't believe that 2 million Internet users is a large enough sample to provide accurate data on traffic and usage. Same thing goes for Alexa.com. While both service are indicative of traffic I think both services are more novelty "barometer" than factual. I tend to take compete's traffic numbers with a grain of salt, so to speak.

But then again that's just me.
